Game Overview
Dead as Disco is a 3D rhythm beat ‘em up developed and published by Brain Jar Games. It launched into Early Access on Steam on May 5, 2026 and is expected to remain in EA for roughly a year. You play Charlie Disco, the late drummer of the cult band Dead as Disco, given a second chance to confront the eight Idols controlled by Harmony Corp and reunite his old bandmates.
Combat blends Arkham-style flow combos with note-chart rhythm timing. Every encounter is a music video: enemies attack on the beat, your hits do bonus damage when on the beat, and bosses literally play the song as a fight.
Core Systems
Beat Sync
The single most important mechanic. Each track has a visible beat indicator (you can swap visual styles in Settings → Accessibility). Hits land in three windows:
| Window | Judgement | Damage | Meter |
|---|---|---|---|
| ±60 ms | Perfect | +50% | +2 segments |
| ±120 ms | Good | +10% | +1 segment |
| Outside | Off-beat | 0% | 0 |
| Whiff / late | Miss | -30% | -1 segment |
Parry, Dodge, Special
- Parry — best counter to single telegraphed strikes. Perfect parry refills 1 Special segment.
- Dodge — best for AOE waves (Beat Wave, Spotlight Spin) and for breaking adjacency.
- Special — full-meter burst. Saves your run during BPM-doubled phases (Arora P3, Blood P4).
See the Combos & Beat Sync guide for every input string and the detailed timing chart.
Story Mode Walkthrough
Story Mode is non-linear after Chapter 2 — you can pursue Idols in different orders. Recommended order for first playthrough on Normal:
| # | Chapter / Idol | Why this order |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arora | Teaches beat-sync basics, easy difficulty floor. |
| 2 | Hemlock | Adds crowd-control and AOE Heavy training. |
| 3 | Dex | First parry skill check — earlier is better while reflexes are warm. |
| 4 | Prophet | Off-beat & Verse Lock — the "rhythm theory" midterm. |
| 5 | Dancer | 8-count phrase counter rewards everything Prophet taught you. |
| 6 | Blood | Speed metal gear check — bring Tempo Window from Hemlock’s drop. |
| 7 | Strings | Time-signature finals; the rhythm theory exam. |
| 8 | The Encore (final) | Spoiler-free: pace yourself, save 2 Specials. |
Modes
Infinite Disco
Endless score-attack across dozens of Song Challenges with global & friend leaderboards. Skill ceiling is much higher than Story — full-Perfect runs are required to crack top 1000 by Week 2 of EA.
Free Play
Sandbox: pick any unlocked song, customize enemy waves, build your own challenges and share them. Use it to drill specific Boss attacks at zero damage.
My Music
The signature feature. Drop your own MP3/FLAC into %LOCALAPPDATA%/DeadAsDisco/MyMusic and the game auto-detects the BPM and generates a playable chart. Read the dedicated My Music guide for file format tips and recommended songs.
